Donald Trump need to be removed from office immediately after yesterday’s coup attempt.
Thousands of Donald Trump supporters forced their way into Capitol Hill to interrupt elected Congressmen/women and Senators who were certifying the electoral college vote result.
Four protestors died in the violent clashes with the Police and Security forces.
So far the FBI have confirmed 68 people have been arrested in connection with the violent attempted coup in Washington DC.
There is growing bi-partisan pressure from both Democrats and Republicans, ex US Presidents and business leaders calling on Vice President Mike Pence to take action to remove Donald Trump from the White House.
There is only 13 days until Trump vacates the White House. BUT after last nights appalling violence in Washington DC many are fearing what he could be capable of doing in the coming days…
So how can Donald Trump be removed from office before January 20th?
Invoking the 25th Amendment of the US Constitution
The 25th Amendment of the US Constitution can be invoked if a sitting US President for whatever reason is unable to carry out their duties as president.
It has only been invoked three times since it was added to the constitution in 1967 after John F Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. This has been when Ronald Reagan, George H Bush and W Bush had surgery under general anaesthetic.
Clause four of the 25th Amendment allows for the Vice President to take over if they and the presidents cabinet no longer declare he or she is fit to carry out their duties as President.
Clause four of the 25th Amendment has NEVER had to be invoked before however…
So in this current situation Mike Pence and the remaining members of Donald Trump’s Cabinet would have to declare that he is NO longer fit to lead the United State of America after yesterday’s coup attempt.
CNN Reporter Jim Acosta had spoken to senior figures in the Trump administration who have said Donald Trump has “lost his mind” since he lost the election in November.
It has been widely reported that during the violence on Capitol Hill that it was Mike Pence NOT the outgoing President who requested the assistance of the National Guard yesterday. He was apparently sat in the Oval Office watching the extraordinary events on TV “enthusiastically”.
Since the violence in Washington DC and in the Capitol building there have been a number of officials in the Trump administration have resigned.
So far US Special Envoy to Northern Ireland and former acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, Deputy National Security Advisor Matthew Pottinger and top aide to First Lady Melania and former White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham have all resigned in the past 24 hours.
Some other Senior figures in the Trump administration are also contemplating resigning. But they are concerned what would happen should they leave their posts.
There are a number of Democrat and Republican congressmen and women who want Donald Trump to be impeached for a second time which would be historic because remember he was impeached in December 2019 for withholding $400 million of military aid to Ukraine in return for information from the Ukrainian government regarding now President elect Joe Bidens son Hunter.
This is because they believe after witnessing first hand the attempted coup he has committed a number of series serious offences: instigating violence, sedation and attempted insurrection.
If Donald Trump’s impeached AGAIN he will banned from running again as president of the United States in 2024 which is something he has previously indicated.
Which is the quickest route for removing Donald Trump from office?
The quickest route for Donald Trump’s removal from office is for Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment citing that based off last nights attempted coup Trump is no longer fit to undertake presidential duties for the remaining 13 days of his presidency.
Mike Pence has got the support of over 100 congressmen and women from both parties, from ex US Presidents and business leaders to invoke the 25th Amendment.
Whereas unless Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi calls for an emergency session for Congress to vote to impeach Donald Trump, Congress and the Senate aren’t due to sit again until January 19th and the Senate the 20th January- the day of Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Is there STILL a possibility that Donald Trump won’t be removed from office until January 20th?
Yes there is still a possibility that if Mike Pence doesn’t invoke the 25th Amendment that Donald Trump isn’t removed from office until his first term because as I mentioned above unless Congress sits for an emergency session to impeach the outgoing President congressmen and women won’t be sitting again until January 19th and the Senate the day after.
But what members of the Presidents cabinet could do is quietly limit his powers and military officials in the Pentagon could refuse any requests if Trump suddenly decides to launch military strikes on Iran for instance.
